Will Filing a Claim Raise My Insurance in Florida?

When it pays to file, when it pays to write a check, and how to run the math before you call your carrier.

Not every claim is treated the same way at renewal, and the difference is worth real money.

    At-fault collision claims

These are the ones that most often move your premium at renewal, and the increase typically follows you for three years. The larger the payout, the bigger the effect.

    Not-at-fault claims

When the other driver's carrier pays, the effect on your premium is usually much smaller. Report it anyway — waiting can complicate the claim.

    Comprehensive claims

Hail, theft, vandalism, and falling objects sit under comprehensive coverage and are generally the least likely to raise your rate. Florida hail and storm damage falls here.

    The math to run first

Get a written repair estimate before you call your insurer. If the repair is only slightly above your deductible, paying out of pocket is often cheaper across three renewal cycles. If it is several thousand dollars over, file.
